ExeTRY St David's welcomes Rugby World Cup trophy
The Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy arrived in Exeter in celebration of the historic tournament which will be coming to the city in August 2025.
The tenth iteration of the competition will be the biggest ever celebration of women’s rugby and is set to leave a lasting legacy, inspiring a new generation of girls in rugby.
Organisers of the tournament met at ExeTRY St David’s on Tuesday morning, the city’s main train station temporarily renamed with a rugby twist.
Amongst those in attendance was Bindu Arjoon, Chief Executive of Exeter City Council, who said, “It was fantastic to see the trophy and meet some of those involved in organising the tournament. There’s less than a year to go now and a lot of work is taking place to ensure that it is a major success and leaves a lasting legacy both here in Exeter and elsewhere around the country.
“There’s no doubt that the Women’s Rugby World Cup will have a major impact for our city, and most importantly it will boost participation in sport and physical activity, particularly for women and girls. I am very much looking forward to this great event coming to Exeter in 2025.”
Also there to welcome the tournament to the city were Maggie Alphonsi MBE, former England Rugby player and World Cup winner, Shaunagh Brown, former England Rugby player and WRWC finalist in 2021, Sarah Massey, Managing Director of WRWC 2025 and Tony Rowe CBE, Chief Executive of Exeter Chiefs and Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor for Leisure Services and Healthy Living.
Exeter’s Sandy Park will host seven matches including two mouth-watering quarter-final fixtures, with Italy and France facing off at there on the opening weekend of the tournament in August 2025.
Also playing at the home of the Exeter Chiefs will be reigning champions New Zealand as well as Canada, Scotland, Wales, Fiji, Brazil and Japan.
With more than 130,000 tickets sold during the pre-sale and already over 100,000 more applicants in the first week of the application phase, there has never been more demand to see women's rugby on the biggest stage.
The ticket application window for all matches is currently open and will close on Tuesday November 19 (11am) so don’t miss out on seeing the world’s best on the biggest stage.
